Art Books on Display in Shields Library Lobby
As the Manetti Shrem Art museum prepares to open two new exhibits on July 14, 2019, Shields Library is highlighting books that pertain to the artists, themes, and contexts of the exhibits.
On the first of two bookcases in the Shields Lobby, you will find books that explore the work of some of the artists featured in the exhibit, Landscape without Boundaries Selections from the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, including Wayne Thiebaud, Gladys Nilsson, Bruce Connor and others. In addition you will find books that resonate with the themes of the exhibit, sampling topics as diverse as the history of California landscape painting, the aesthetics of natural and modified landscapes, American women artists, and environmental messaging.
The second case is full of books on contemporary ceramic art centering around the work of Kathy Butterly, whose work is the subject of Kathy Butterly ColorForm. Some of the books include pictures and discussion of her work, others address broad themes in modern ceramics, including urban pottery and the relationship between ceramics and other art media, while still others consider artists such as Robert Arnesen (Butterly’s teacher at UC Davis), Ken Price, Viola Frey and George Ohr (known as the Mad Potter of Biloxi) who influenced Butterly’s work.
These displays are an invitation to explore, both the exhibits at the Manetti-Shrem and the rich collection of art books in Shields Library. Check the museum’s Web site for more information about the exhibits.
