Floor plan for Shields 167, a new lecture and multipurpose room coming Summer 2019.

Coming soon to Shields: New Lecture and Multipurpose Room

Renovation of Shields Room 167, formerly known as Course Reserves, will begin this month. Once the work is complete, the room will serve as a general assignment classroom Monday through Friday from 8:00AM and 5:00PM. When the room is not being used for classes, it will serve as additional study space for students. Occasionally, the room will also be used for meetings and events hosted by the library.

Since the room will serve multiple purposes, tables and chairs will be moveable and stackable so that the space can be configured accordingly. This feature is just one example of how Shields is upgrading its spaces to allow for more flexibility in the future and is just one of the first steps to reimagining the space of Shields Library.

Particularly as our campus gets busier, we want to make sure our space is used efficiently and as much of the day as possible.

—Deputy University Librarian Bill Garrity

Construction should be complete by Spring 2019 and Room 167 will be ready for instructional use as early as Summer 2019. The new classroom is expected to hold 182 people and will have a standard classroom setup with a podium and potentially multiple display screens.

The project is a collaboration between the library; Design and Construction Management, which oversees all renovations of campus buildings; the Registrar; and Undergraduate Education, which will have primary use of the space during the day. This partnership with campus provides temporary classroom space while other campus classrooms are renovated and the new Teaching and Learning complex is built. The agreement is currently designed to last for five years, from Winter Quarter 2019 through Fall Quarter 2023.

The library is pleased to be an active partner with campus in developing solutions to the ongoing issue of space needed for student success.
