Theme for the week: Russia & The Kamchatka Peninsula

The Kamchatka Peninsula is on the eastern coast of Russia. Kamchatka is a place of extraordinary primal beauty, hot springs, snow-capped peaks, rushing rivers, and of course, their volcanoes! Kamchatka is active with volcanoes because it is part of the Ring of Fire along the northern portion of the Pacific Ocean where three tectonic plates meet (the Eurasia plate, the North America Plate and the Pacific Plate).  The Aleutian Islands archipelago stretch from the eastern shore of the Kamchatka peninsula to Alaska’s mainland at the northern edge of the Pacific Plate.  The Kuril Islands string from the southern point of Kamchatka to Japan.

The Kamchatka River and the surrounding Central Valley are surrounded by large volcanic belts, containing around 160 volcanoes, 29 of them still active. This gives the peninsula perhaps the highest density of volcanoes and associated volcanic phenomena in the world. Nineteen of the active volcanoes here are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
